What are points?

In the upper right-hand corner of people's posts it says about points and has a hyperlink saying "Donate". What does it all mean?

[Glovebox]

Means you donate points to other users. Points are used for buying an arcade pass to use in the errr.. arcade and to buy effects such as bold and italic for your username in the shop.
