Rping Tips

RPing is at the very heart of efedding. In most feds it is how match results are determined and how you develop your character. It cannot be said how truly important RPing is to the entire efedding experience. With limited control of your characters action in the ring, the only thing that you can control is what is said before the match. Its not as simple as it sounds to write a good RP that grabs the attention of the reader, not only the staff judging the role play, but the other workers as well. The best way to get on the good side of the best RPers is to RP just as well as they do. Here are some types of RPs and how they can be best utilized.

1. In-Ring Interviews: Depending on your fed these can be looked down upon or held in high regard. The upside of an in-ring interview is that it is the most realistic kind of RP. If you watch wrestling week in and week out these are the types of promos you are most likely to see. In-Ring Interviews can be done well, but are often not. If the interview takes place during a show and further develops an existing angle or starts a new one, then they are being used correctly. Calling out your opponent can be a powerful way to draw reader excitement. There are several things that you can do during an in-ring interview that are not only fun and exciting, but provoking as well. Demeaning or degrading your opponent in an in-ring interview is a great way to draw their ire and even help increase the overall quality of the RPs of your opponent. Calling attention to quirks or idiosyncrasies in your opponents approach to RPing, if done in a way that does not diminish the handler is a great way to get the best from your opponent. In-ring interviews also allow you to interact with the fans and the commentators, developing the alignment of your character. All in all if you do an in-ring interview correctly, it can have great effect. But, here are a few things that you should avoid when doing anin-ring interview. 1. Repeat over and over how good you are (if you’re that good you’ll find other ways to express it. 2. Repeat over and over how badly you are going to kick your opponents ass. (This is generally looked upon by staff to be filler and only detracts from whatever point you are trying to make. 3. Belittle an opponent’s handler. (This only serves to create OOC drama that no fed needs.)

2. Out of Ring Promos: These have become the new best way to RP. They allow your character to move outside of the wrestling ring and into the real world. This is a potent way of showing not only that your wrestler is a real person, but that they have an attitude that extends outside of the ring. Take your wrestler out in public. Take them to places that will help to reveal to the public what kind of person they are and what kind of wrestler they are. Put them in situations where they can talk about their match without having to force it into the squared circle. Take the wrestler to their home, or to the home of their significant other. Have them interact with people close to them that never appear in the ring or at ringside. Develop traits outside of the ring that will help define them inside of it. The main advantage of moving out of the ring is that you can discuss your upcoming match in the context of their real life. This adds realism to the character as a person and not just a machine that wrestles in the ring. Try to stay out of life and death situations as they tend to draw the reader too far from the ring, and turn the already dramatic world of professional wrestling into a soap opera. Have friends and enemies, but don’t kill them. Don’t burn down houses or generally do things that will get you arrested. That only serves to detract attention away from your opponent and leaves the reader wondering why you’re wrestling and not wearing county blues.

3. Character Development RPs: These are RPs that are written simply to entertain the fans. They don’t have to be connected to any upcoming match, but are simply a story told about the wrestler that is used to…you guessed it develop character. These kinds f stories can be a little more outrageous. They are not being judged for wins and losses, but just to entertain. Still stay away from the immoral and illegal as that only distracts and makes the character less believable. Character Development RPs can be used to connect events in the characters life together, or to explain an upcoming alignment change or to solidify an alignment. If your character is getting increasingly moody and despondent write an RP explaining something in their personal lives that would explain the changes.

In conclusion, make your RPs different from the other people in your fed. It’ll make the experience of reading it a joy instead of a chore. Good RPing comes from good planning, good effort and good follow through. Its not hard, but its not easy. Remember that no character is going to be in the same mood all the time. Even the most evil character wil get a kick out of something, and the most face will get ****ed off every once in a while.

Finally…

Things to make RPs better:
1. HTML
2. Humor
3. Drama
4. Depth
5. Precision
6. Correct use of the English language
7. Building up your opponent

Things that make RPs worse:
1. Hate
2. Criminal acts
3. Indescriminate Violence
4. Saying how good you are
5. Not proving it by being original
6. Repetition
7. Tearing down your opponent (handler in particular)

I hope you found something here that is of use to you. Remember that RPing should always be fun and never be a chore. Be kind, its only a game.

Creating a character is not as simple as throwing some height and weight stats together and sticking a name with it. I’ve RPed with the came character for almost three years now, and I’ve found that those that change characters often do so because they come into the situation without a clear cut idea of what and who their character is. This is usually due to haphazardly choosing their characters. Here are a few points I like to tell people when they are coming up short on ideas.

1. What does your character have to say? Have a conversation with your character. See what they’d have to say about some issues. What do they think about the rich, the poor, their family, their job, or wrestling? Answering these kinds of questions will help you create a real voice for your wrestler and give you the chance to see how they would react in different situations.

2. Is your character a good guy or a bad guy? That question may sound simple enough, but as is the case in real life the question is more difficult than it may sound. We live in a world of gray areas, your character should reflect that. There is no pure evil and no pure good. That’s not to say that your characters can’t have tendencies toward good or bad, but quite the opposite it means that your character should have the flexibility to change as the situation does.

3. Why do you want to use this character? If its to work out your frustrations in your own life, remember that you may not always be ****ed off or jubilant, so you need to remember never to write all about yourself, but never develop any character that is too far removed from yourself, it’ll only make it more difficult to come up with ideas.

4. What’s your gimmick? Meaning, what kind of character will your character be. This is the point when you can start looking at real wrestlers and other celebrities and see what sort of persona they’ve created. In many feds it is appreciated to not too closely associate yourself with a taken gimmick. No fed head wants to deal with 5 people that all act just like the Rock. Take your favorite persona and bend it up, make it your own. Create catchphrases, calling cards.

5. What’s your name? Picking a name is perhaps the biggest decision you’ll have to make. It’s going to be the first thing that people see when they see you’ve signed up. What kind of impression do you want to have. “Death Eater” doesn’t have same thing to say as “Bill Marshall.” I’ve found that having a real name is not only more freeing, but makes people take notice because it’s not going to give an impression and people will read on to see what the deal is. I’m a fan of nicknames and names together like “The Real Deal” Gary Mac, or simply names. I think we’ve all seen too many Ice, Angel, Blade, Shadow, DeathSomething, and it doesn’t draw attention to your character.

6. What size of person are we talking about here? Look at the height and weight of some real superstars and decide what size of person you want to have. And remember that if the fed head is good he/she will make the moveset fit the size. Nobody seven feet tall is doing a dragon screw and no one 187 pounds is doing the torture rack. Not that small is bad and big is good. Look at others in the fed and try to go with something different. If its full of beasts, be the little guy. If its full of luchadors, be the behemoth.

7. Lastly, create a character that will endure without ever becoming a caricature. The last thing you want to do is make RPing a chore. Create a character with the depth and charisma to succeed. If you don’t think you created a successful character then you probably did not.

"Quality over Quantity"

This is only a suggestion it is not a law of efeds or anything. I made this article because I am tired of the famous efed saying "Quality Over Quantity". I have heard that countless times and I never questioned it for the most part assuming that they knew what they were talking about. Then I joined a fed and I had a match against someone who was supposed to be one of the best in the fed. Well he put out two decent rps and I put out one great rp. Before I even posted the rp I showed it to the owner of the fed. He looked at it and said "Its good but its more quantity than quality", judging only by the length of it because most of the time my rps are quite long. When he said that to me I instantly knew he didnt know what the hell he was talking about and now whenever someone says that to me I ask them to define the saying, 90% dont know what the hell it means. So here is what I consider it to mean.

What is Quantity?
Quantity is not how long, or how large your rps are. QUANTITY IS HOW MANY RPS YOU MAKE FOR YOUR MATCH, REGARDLESS OF HOW LONG THEY ARE. When the guy told me it was more quantity and I havent put one rp out yet, making that my first, it proved that this fed was not ran by an owner who knew what he was doing.

What is Quality?
Now this is the hard part to define. My definition of Quality is based on the aspects of judgement that should be apart of every fed's staff judgement. The aspects are as followed: Detail, Storyline Compatability, Length, Interaction with Surroundings, Spelling & Grammar, Creativity & Originality, Comedic or Serious, Realism.

What is Detail?
Detail is what allows the reader to picture your roleplay in their mind. If they cant picture it then your rp is instantly bad. Now even though a lot of detail is a good thing, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH DETAIL. For example, explaining what your wrestler is wearing and the colors of it is a good thing...giving the size of the clothes and what store they bought them at is a bad thing because no one cares to know that much. Putting alot of detail in your scenes and settings is a good thing but too much is bad. For example, saying what time of the day it is, describing where you are like in the middle of the road or on a sidewalk in which city is a good thing, decsribing the by-standers around you in detail or describing what is on the specials of a cafe you are standing in front of are NOT good things. So when you feel that your detail is becoming boring then you are probably right.

What is Storyline Compatability?
This is whether or not your rp has to do with the storyline your wrestler is currently in. If your rp strays away from the storyline alittle then you might slide with it but too much and you will ruin the storyline thus ruining the roleplay. For example, lets say you are in a storyline where you are trying to date the boss's daughter if you stray away a little like making your wrestler "think to himself" whether or not he should go out on the town and get a hooker or something is fine and will probably slide. However, if you are in such a storyline and in one of your rps you make your wrestler turn into a gothic blood drinker you instantly killed that storyline. If you arent currently in a storyline you wont have to worry about that but you should get in one as soon as you can.

Isn't Length part of Quantity?
Length of an rp has nothing to do with the Quantity of your rping throughout the week. The reason is length can only add good quality to an rp. This doesnt mean if your rp sucks to add length to it and it will be good. If you add length it will look as if it were good but if it still sucks they will still be able to tell. Now if your rp is good already and then you add more length to it then you cant ruin the rp by adding more story and detail (depending) to it. If your rp turns out bad due to length then it was already bad in the first place.

What do you mean by Interaction with your Surroundings?
Well if you have in-depth detail about where you are and describe the things around you but you just stand there and talk then your description is pretty much pointless so move around and interact with people or objects. Having a love intrest or girlfriend/wife is a good idea but making your character a pimp/whore monger is not that good of an idea. So stray away from the hooker angles and such.

What does Spelling & Grammar matter?
Most fedheads, at least most of the ones I know, dont really care that much about spelling. If you have error randomly in your rp it wont really matter that much but if you have many then it will lose sense and not be able to be understood. Grammar is a MUST if you get the grammar correct and spelling wrong then there isnt much of a problem but if you get the spelling correct and the grammar wrong then your rp wont make any sense and be practicly impossible to understand. For example, we meet when the in center of the ring. Now when you read that I am sure it didnt make much sense but if you studied it you could tell it was just misplaced words in the sentence "when we meet in the center of the ring". Just by moving two words the sentence lost sense. Now I am sure no one will want to try to figure out what your rps say so remember grammar is a big part of rping.

What is the difference between Creativity & Originality?
Creativity is when you throw a twist on something and make it good when it has already been seen before or even if it hasnt. Originality is trying to stay away from previous things you have said and previous things you have done or what anyone has said or done for that matter. You can still be creative with something not original but without creativity your rp, regardless of originality, will be boring. DO NOT REPEAT YOURSELF OVER AND OVER!!! That cannot be stressed enough.

Is your rp Comedic or Serious?
These are basically the only options you have with making an rp. If your wrestler is a joker or a prankster then comedy is the way you want to go. If your wrestler is kind of a Ken Shamrock/Chris Benoit type then serious is the way. DO NOT mix the two. No one can be a comedian and serious at the same time or hell in the same rp, well except for a Skitzo gimmick. However, Skitzo gimmicks are never good. The reason I say this is because being a skitzo is so overlydone and can never gain respect. If your wrestler is a skitzo then how can anyone take you seriously? At one time you are funny and a face and at other times you are serious and a heel...Unless you have a storyline with another person sperating the two then no one would know if they are supposed to hate you or love you...basically keeping you trapped in a section of nothingness lowcarder. Same thing goes for wrestlers who choose to be nuetral, seriously PICK A SIDE, ALREADY.

What do you mean by Realism?
Something that is believable is realistic. If you have zombies come out of the ground and chase you then your rp is COMPLETELY NOT realistic. Realism is a big part of rping as well as the rest. However, you can go as far as throwing some movie type scequences in there. For example, having an rp kind of like Fast and the Furious could be believable if you stay away from the main character names and plots. So having stuff like an action movie type or a movie type could be believable but as far as doing something like Alien Vs Predator well you have better chance of making a sex scene with Britney Spears believable.

I hope this clearifies "Quality over Quantity" and doesnt just confuse you more.
